·      Policy Practice:

The organization has 10 years long Strategic Planning Action which developed in a participatory manner for the period of 2015 -2025 which being tried to follow up strongly. The organization has also introduced policies on Organizational Development Policy, Financial Management Policy, Human Resource Policy, Gender Policy, Child protection Policy, Micro Finance Policy, and Disaster Management Guidelines. These policies are open to all and being practiced regularly

·      Program Management:

There are two styles of management i.e. Central Management Team-CMT and Program Management Team -PMT formed with program and management personnel of different program and project of SEDS. Both the team sits to review the implementation weekly and monthly basis following the decisions of Executive Committee. The Executive Director is coordinating CMT and Program Coordinator is looking after on PMT.

·      Financial Management:

Two separate wings of SEDS accounts and admin are working together to ensure transparency and accountability in financial management system. All dealings related to finance are being strongly maintained based on the organizational financial management policy. Both internal and external audits have been taken place periodically. Monthly and quarterly reports prepared as regular basis and submit as per the requirement of donors and for other purposes.

  • Transparency and Accountability:

SEDS is always transparent in financial transactions as well as any breach related to management and program. The members of General and Executive Committee, Central and Program Management Team discuss and take decisions through regular meetings, which circulated to the concerned members to execute the decisions accordingly. There is a structured system exists to ensure accountability of every individuals in the organization following the organogram.

  1.Emergence Of SEDS:           SEDS is the acronym of “Social Economic Development Society”. It is a non-political, non-profitable, secular and non-government development organization. It came into existence in 1993 in response to the felt-needs of the area of the poor and hard core people especially problems of endemic poverty which manifest in landlessness, unemployment, illiteracy, malnutrition and vulnerability to frequent natural disaster by the active initiative of local social workers, philanthropists and educationists with a view to alleviating poverty through empowerment, education and resource mobilization for improving their life and livelihood and innovating appropriate development strategies to lead the program towards sustainability. At present, its activities have been extended in remote areas of Barisal district for the good of distressed and powerless people.

2. Legal status of SEDS

SEDS is registered with Department of Social Service, Government of Bangladesh Under

Ordinance 46 [XLVI] (Voluntary Activities) Regulation Rules, 1961 having Reg. No. Bari-366/94   Dated 06-06-1994, Women and Child Affairs Bureau , and Directorate of Youth Development.

5. Aim of SEDS

The main focus of SEDS is to empower the distressed and powerless people especially women and children in socio-economic emancipation to lead and active and healthy life through group formation, people’s organization, concretization, education, training, revolving micro-credit against economic activities, health, nutrition, sanitation, water-aid, social afforestation and agricultural technology transfer along with facilitating them in establishing their due rights.

6. Development viewpoint of SEDS –

The development philosophy of SEDS is based on the conviction that the paramount need of the people is “not relief, but release”-the way to develop their dormant potentialities and capabilities for their personal, social, educational, economical and civic growth and development. SEDS believes that man is the center of all development initiatives, because men can change their own situation through individual or joint efforts. As such changes have to be made both in perception, belief and attitude along with transforming their latent potentialities into productive human resources for development. Hence, SEDS prioritizes people and their participation in development process.

7. Development approach & working strategy of SEDS: –

SEDS believes in process oriented development approach rather than task oriented for making the program people oriented and leads towards sustainability. Accordingly, SEDS adopts both target group and community development approach in program implementation. In working strategy of SEDS, it stresses on non-directive bottom-up and people’s participatory development approaches. In target group approach, SEDS first organizes the distressed and powerless people both men and women into homogeneous groups for their development. Secondly, it facilitates them in socio economic empowerment and finally, it facilitates them with revolving micro-credit to undertake economic activities both for poverty alleviation and promoting women’s economic right and control over resources through active involvement and participation.

8. Execution and management:

SEDS adopts decentralized participatory management system in program implementation. The General Body, the supreme authority of the organization consists of 21 members. A 7-member Executive Committee is elected biennially out of General Body for policy making and program execution. All the policies of Executive Committee are implemented by the modest program staff headed by the Chief Executive who is responsible for overall program implementation and management. The Chief Executive is the Ex-officio member-secretary of the Executive Committee..

9. Staff strength of SEDS

At present, total staff strength of SEDS stands 42, where 22 are female and the rest 20 are male. All the staffs are full time. Apart from it, there are 10 volunteers who are rendering their services in program implementation. Noted that all the staff are committed to work with the people and trained up properly for efficient program implementation. Staff are engaged in working with the people and trained up properly for efficient program implementation. One Doctor is rendering his voluntary services for running Health Care Centre of SEDS. The said Doctor is reputed one and professor of University of Science and Technology Patuakhali (USTP). Academic qualifications of staff vary from S.S.C (Secondary School Certificate) to Master degree and the physician is educated from abroad after his M. B. B. S. degree. Besides, a

B.Sc Civil Engineer is also engaged with the development works of SEDS.

  • SEDS have its own two primary school’s and one health center semipucca building has acquired good reputation and well acceptance to Govt. Sectors, LGED, NGOs, DPHE, Barisal City Corporation, Ministry of Health Family Planning, Ministry of Education , Ministry of Social Well Fare Cooperative, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Disaster Management.
